Country Garden is a really popular Emma Britton flower Splashback design, and has now made its way into a kitchen in South Carolina, America. And it looks fabulous!

We caught up with Jennifer who coveted this design for her kitchen. She told us a little bit about where she lives and how she found the process of working with Emma Britton to get her Splashback ordered, shipped, and installed in America. Fascinating to find out a little bit more about where Jennifer lives in South Carolina, let this feature take you somewhere new.

Emma Britton splashbacks are available across the UK and internationally, so get in touch with your project today. These are splashbacks that will give your kitchen or bathroom the dream look you’ve been searching for.

Describe your home and garden and what it’s like where you live in South Carolina

Our home is in the historic district of a small town in South Carolina. It is 100 years old and while that would not be considered old in the UK, it is considered historical by US standards. The home is a Dutch Colonial with shingled and stone exterior. The interior in elegant with beautiful crown moldings and unusual cabinetry and woodwork, created by the leading artisans of the day. While these details have all been left intact throughout the house, the kitchen was updated in 2014 by a previous owner.

We have about two acres in the heart of the town. Our garden has woodland areas filled with camellias, azaleas, rhododendrons, jasmine, gardenias, quince and hydrangeas, all under a canopy of live oaks, magnolias, tea olives, crepe myrtles and different varieties pines. We have garden areas including a cutting garden, a wildflower garden and a courtyard garden.

Do you follow American interiors trends or like to define your own style?

No. I seldom follow interior design trends, opting for what feels right for us and how we use the house.

Why did you need a splashback?

When we purchased the home in 2021, I knew I wanted to update aspects of the kitchen…the tile behind the sink area and particularly the area surrounding the range.  Previously, the range area used plain white 8×8 tiles. I wanted something more dramatic.

Had you been looking for the right ‘look’ for a while?

I searched for two years for a look.  I viewed so many kitchens online and in design magazines. While “on trend”, I felt most lacked any “personality” or individuality.  I wanted something more dramatic and unique…a real showstopper.

What drew you to Emma’s work and her Country Garden design – it’s such a lovely flower splashback from her ‘Up The Garden Path’ Collection

As I mentioned, I had been searching for something to work with the area around my range.  I saw Emma’s splashbacks whilst visiting the U.K. and immediately knew I’d found what I was looking for. The vibrant colours and the flowers would be the perfect focal point in my kitchen.

My husband and I are both avid gardeners. I tend to incorporate flowers in my home design as much as possible. The colours in the Country Garden design are two of my favourites and those colours are carried throughout the house. Emma’s work is so unique. I knew it wasn’t something I’d see in anyone else’s kitchen.

How did Emma help you decide Country Garden would be right for your kitchen?

I had a small concern with ensuring the correct measurements as we don’t use metric, how we’d install the splashback and get the right materials to do that. I had absolutely no reason to be concerned. Most of our communication was through e-mail which worked well, given the time difference. Emma was very detailed in our communications throughout the process and very quick to respond. I sent her photos of the area and she guided us through measuring. She made it nearly flawless with communications, the samples she provided, her installation instruction sheet and the materials she provided for installation. The piece was so well-packed for shipping that it arrived in perfect condition (even after the delivery person dropped the container on the ground!).

One very tiny stumble was the tube of sealant is a size that does not fit the standard caulking gun found in the US. Who knew? We improvised. The turnaround time from order date to receiving the splashback, even with international shipping, clearing customs and such, was quicker than the time it took for me to order and receive tile I ordered from a local company for another room in the house.

What do you see as the main benefits of a splashback over tiles or washable paint, for example?

Areas around a range can get splatters from all sorts of things – food, grease, etc. When tiled, the grout, even when sealed or treated, can be difficult to clean and can stain or yellow over time.  The glass is just a quick wipe and it’s clean.

How has your splashback made a difference to your kitchen and day to day?

My kitchen, prior to the splashback was, well, pretty boring. Now, people walk in to my kitchen and they are “wowed” by the splashback. It is like nothing else they have ever seen.

What do you love most about your flower splashback?

Every time I walk into my kitchen, I can’t help but smile. My splashback just makes me happy.
