Splashback Case Study: Over Ten + Years On And As Good as New

14th February 2025

I recently had the pleasure of revisiting Julie in Derby, who commissioned me to design a bespoke Emma Britton splashback in 2013.  It still looks as good as new over ten + years on (12 to be exact!). We reminisced about working together on her long lasting splashback pictured here, and Julie kindly penned her thoughts for my Journal too.

Julie’s splashback sits underneath the wall hung cabinets and behind her hob in what I call an ‘upside down T’ shape that I make a lot of for clients. Julie still has as much affection for her vibrant poppy design that has brought colour and personality to her kitchen ever since it was installed.

Reconnecting with Julie last year in 2024 at one of my painting workshops was such a pleasure. And a testament to the positive experience she’d had working with me. All of my customers are as special as the unique splashbacks I make for them and I pride myself on offering exceptional customer service.

From the initial design phase through to making and installation, I will take you through the process so you feel cared for and happy. Maybe I’ll be sharing your splashback story in another ten years – do get in touch for a no obligation chat if you’ve got an idea for a project in mind, I’m always delighted to offer my advice. I hope you enjoy reading Julie’s splashback story.

Why did you need a splashback?

We were having a new kitchen fitted and a friend of ours who worked with Emma’s Mum showed us some of Emma’s work. I am not a fan of tiles and the splashback was a much better option for us!

What was it like working with Emma to create a bespoke splashback design for your kitchen?

Emma was very easy to work with and could visualise how the splashback would create a lovely feature, and as part of the process enabled us to see this too. We live in Allestree, Derby and have a much extended 5 bedroom detached house, with a large open plan kitchen/dining room. This overlooks a long garden in which there are 2 beautiful willow trees and flower beds. Emma really talked us through how her splashback design would suit our style of home and kitchen.

What has an Emma Britton splashback brought to your day to day?

The splashback makes me smile when I enter the kitchen. And even after all this time, still generates some lovely comments from family and friends.

Meeting Julie all these years later at my Painting Workshop and hearing how much she still loves her splashback is rewarding – quality materials and workmanship are very important to me as a designer maker.

Your splashback still looks amazing 10 years on, do you think washable paint or tiles would have fared so well?

I don’t think tiles would have the same effect for me and would be harder to keep clean unlike a long lasting splashback. I’m sure there would be a few discoloured grout lines by now! Friends and anyone coming to the house always comment on how beautiful the splashback is.

What drew you to Emma’s design style?

Poppies are some of my favourite flowers and I liked the idea of them in my kitchen, Emma’s floral designs felt like a natural choice.  And so Emma created the bespoke poppy design for us and it really appealed. We could see it would look good, be easy to keep clean and has certainly stood the test of time.

Had you been searching for the right ‘look’ for a while?

We hadn’t really considered splashbacks until we were shown some of Emma’s. However, the moment we saw the design she created for us, we knew it would be a stunning addition to our kitchen.

Anything you’d like to add?

I would recommend Emma’s splashbacks and design style to anyone looking for a beautiful, bespoke addition to their kitchen.

EMMA’S DESIGNER NOTE:

Commissioned as a bespoke design, the original colours in this 2013 splashback are as vibrant as ever. The glass is pristine, having been cleaned hundreds of times and remains the shining star in Julie’s kitchen, bringing her joy every day! I use high quality colour processes and craftsmanship in the making of all my splashbacks so they stay looking amazing.

A splashback with a bold design and vibrant colours is a great way to bring personality to your kitchen. You can give it a really unique feel with an Emma Britton splashback. I can turn the vision you have in your mind for how you want a splashback in your room to look into reality!
